PROPERTIES OF CARBON DIOXIDE
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a colorless, odorless gas
composed of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms,
commonly produced through respiration, combustion,
and natural processes. It is an essential component of
Earth’s atmosphere and plays a significant role in the
carbon cycle and plant photosynthesis.
CO₂ is slightly acidic when dissolved in water, forming
carbonic acid, which influences the pH of natural water
systems. It is also classified as a greenhouse gas
because it traps heat in the atmosphere, helping
regulate Earth’s temperature but contributing to global
warming when present in excessive amounts.
