Assignment 1 2026
Unique number: 895535
Due Date: 8 May 2026
1. Two cohesive devices (2 answers provided)
One cohesive device used in Text A is repetition cohesion. Repetition cohesion happens
when important words or related words are repeated in a text to connect ideas and keep the
topic clear (ENG2601/501, 2021). In Text A, words such as translation, isiZulu, English,
culture, language and meaning are repeated throughout the article. This repetition keeps the
reader focused on the main issue, which is how translation between isiZulu and English
affects cultural meaning and identity. It also strengthens the link between Gumede’s
research and the wider issue of language power in South Africa (Dlamini, 2025).
