Probability:
Step 1: Important Definitions in Probability
Before solving probability questions, you must understand these 3 basic terms:
Event
Simple Event
Sample Space
Now, let’s understand all one by one.
Basic concepts of probability:
1. Event: An event is any outcome or result of an experiment.
Examples of the events are;
• Getting a head in a coin toss
• Getting 4 in dice
• Getting a boy
• Getting a Heart card
All these are called events.
2. Simple Event: A simple event has only ONE outcome. It cannot be broken further.
Examples of the simple events are;
Coin toss: Only heads implies a simple event.
Dice: Only number 3 implies a simple event.
Card: Only the Ace of Hearts implies a simple event.
3. Sample Space
Sample space means: List of ALL possible outcomes, and it is denoted by the symbol S.
Let’s take a few examples for this.
Example 1: Tossing a coin once
Possible outcomes: Head, Tail
Sample Space, S = {H, T}
Example 2: Tossing a Dice once
Possible outcomes:1,2,3,4,5,6
