Question 1: Scenario 1 Technology Integration in Class
1.1. Learning theory best explaining struggles with self-paced online tasks
The sociocultural theory (Vygotsky) best explains why learners struggle with self-paced
online tasks. Vygotsky emphasised that all higher cognitive processes originate in social
interaction and that learning is mediated within the Zone of Proximal Development
(ZPD) through guided participation with more knowledgeable others (Donald et al.,
2014, pp. 77–78). Online, self-paced tasks lack the immediate social interaction,
collaborative dialogue, and scaffolding that are central to this theory. Without the
presence of a teacher and peers to mediate learning and challenge understanding,
learners often feel disconnected and fail to deepen their knowledge, resulting in reduced
engagement and participation (Nel & Nel, 2016, p. 38).
1.2. Two behaviourist strategies to improve engagement (4)
Behaviourist principles rely on reinforcement to shape behaviour. Two strategies are
Positive reinforcement: The teacher can provide immediate, contingent rewards for task
completion, such as awarding points, digital badges, or positive comments in the online
platform each time a learner submits an assignment. This will strengthen the desired
behaviour of regular participation (Davis, 2013, p. 13).
Token economy system: The teacher can implement a system where learners earn
tokens for every completed activity and for exploring additional resources. Accumulated
tokens can be exchanged for a tangible or activity-based reward, such as a “homework
