FUNDAMENTALS
OF PHYSICS
A Comprehensive Guide to Classical and
Modern Principles

, 1. Electric Charges and Fields
Electric charges and fields deal with the basic property of matter called charge, which can be
positive or negative and is conserved in nature. Like charges repel and unlike charges attract
each other. This interaction is governed by fundamental laws of electrostatics.

Coulomb’s Law: The force F between two point charges q₁ and q₂ is given by:
F = k · (q₁q₂) / r²

The concept of an electric field explains how charges influence the space around them. The
field at a point is defined as the force experienced by a unit positive charge. Electric field
lines help visualize this; they originate from positive charges and terminate at negative
charges.

Gauss’s Law relates the electric flux through a closed surface to the net charge enclosed:
Φ = Q_enclosed / ε₀
