organism itself. they have 2 important jobs
1. assist osteoblasts and osteoclasts in forming and breaking down bone tissue.
2. communication and exchange with blood vessels and nerve cells and bone tissue
intramembranous ossification the process of bone formation in the flat bones of the
skull and mandible, where bone forms directly within mesenchyme arranged in sheetlike layers
that resemble membranes
Canaliculi Hairlike canals that allow the osteocytes to connect to each other and
exchange substances
wandering cells Move through and appear in tissues temporarily, usually in response to
an injury or infection
osteoclasts a type of bone cell that breaks down bone tissue
