, THE CASE OF MRS. G 2
The Case of Mrs. G
In the case of Mrs. G, it appears by her story that she is going through an extremely stressful
and unhappy time in her life. It is a normal reaction to feel upset and angry towards her children,
whom undoubtedly have her best interest in mind. She is showing clear signs of emotional
distress. Her life that she knows, and built with her now late husband, seems to be diminishing
piece by piece. It is not just her home that she would be leaving behind, but the loving memories
that she holds so dear. The ability for her to reminisce in her own home brings Mrs. G back to
happier times, and makes her feel accomplished for all that she has built in her life.

Mrs. G’s response to her daughter does not surprise me at all. Many elders want to remain

in their home for as long as possible; not only to ponder the memories, but it is a way to hold on

to their independence. Their thought of an assisted living facility or nursing home is usually not a

pleasant one, and they see it as another step closer towards death. Moreover, deep down in their

gut, they visualize an outdated “old folks home” and have not been inside a modern assisted

living center (Bursack, 2017). This example portrays a stubborn mindset, and a resistance to
change, much like how Mrs. G responds to her daughter. Mrs.

G’s life with her husband follows traditional gender roles of Hispanic culture. Because she relied

upon her husband for everything, she seemed to be more submissive and dependent, which are

(University of California Irvine, N.D.) Her husband displays behaviors that can be associated
with the gender specific-script of Machismo seen in Hispanic culture (University of California

impression, Mrs. G is a very traditional woman who adheres to the gender roles of Hispanic
culture.
