How did the new technologies of WWI affect soldiers fighting on the front lines? Please include at
least three examples of new technologies in your answer.
The new technologies introduced during World War I REALLY impacted soldiers fighting on the front
lines. They contributed to both the danger and the overall experience of warfare. The use of machine
guns was a GAME CHANGER for those on the field. They allowed soldiers to fire hundreds of rounds
per minute, which made defending positions far easier. But it was terrible for those on the other side.
Because the gun could fire at such a fast rate, the other side had to think, plan, and act really quickly.
The use of the machine gun forced the soldiers to have to come up with a different plan. They could
no longer just charge because they would instantly be killed.
The advancements in artillery were also a really big thing. Some of these include the development of
heavier but far more accurate cannons, which became the leading cause of casualties in the war. Can
you imagine being hit with a cannon!!? Techniques such as indirect fire (the ability to hit a target
without seeing it) and the introduction of more powerful shells meant that armies could bomb
enemy positions from great distances, creating significant damage before an attack was even
launched. (YIKES)
← TANK ……………… ………………….
The creation of chemical weapons, such as chlorine as well as mustard gas, created yet another threat
on the battlefield. These gases could incapacitate or even kill soldiers who were not prepared and
were unable to grab protective equipment. (Gas mask, certain clothing) The unpredictability of gas
attacks created fear as well as additional mental stress for troops, as they had to constantly be alert
and ready to protect themselves against a threat that could come without warning. Talk about PTSD!
