Intrinsic Valuation Method The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model is the theoretical gold standard of
valuation and a must-know for entrepreneurs. It's an intrinsic valuation method,
which means it attempts to determine the "true" value of a business based on its
future cash-generating potential, rather than relying on comparable companies
or market sentiment. This class will provide a step-by-step guide on how to build
a basic DCF model.
Key steps in a DCF method include Forecasting free cash flow: Projecting a business’s future free cash flow,
focusing on the key components like revenue growth, operating expenses, and
capital expenditures.
Determining the discount rate: The Discount Rate is the rate we will use to
calculate the present value of the future free cash flows. We will use the
weighted average cost of capital (WACC).
Calculating terminal value: The technique(s) used to estimate the value of the
business beyond the projection period.
The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Formula: The formula for discounted cash flow
(DCF) valuation is the sum of the present value of all future cash flows, where
each cash flow is discounted back to the present using a discount rate.
