Flexible Flow Layout - ANSWERThe work centers focus on a particular type of function
like drilling, sanding, welding, painting, assembly. While each work center performs a
single function, a large degree of variation is possible at each workstation. ex: Painting
can have multiple different colors.
Line-Flow Layout - ANSWERThe work centers are located in a linear path. Items begin
on one end of a line and continue in a linear path to the last work center. Each work
center performs the exact same task to every unit that passes through that work center.
ex: motor assembly for a particular car.
Hybrid Layout - ANSWERThis layout combines elements of both line and flexible flow
layouts. For example, products may pass through a layout in a linear fashion, but each
workstation would have the ability to allow for some level of customization.
GT Cells (Group Technology) - ANSWERA type of hybrid layout that uses line flow for
low volume processes. The company can then produce multiple end items that can be
categorized into product families. (Couches, Tables, Chairs) Each having their own GT
cell. While one cell may only produce couches, the couches can all be made similarly
but with different features. ex: types of fabric.
Fixed-Position Layout - ANSWERThis layout is used for very large and hard to move
items; Airplanes, cruise ships, office buildings, dams. In this case the workers and
machines go to the worksite and move around the item as needed.
OWMM Cells (One Work Multiple Machines) - ANSWERThis is typically a line-flow
layout that is designed to be operated by a single employee. Typically, the line flow
layout is in a u-shape.
