DUE DATE: MAY 2026
,GROUP WORK PROPOSAL
PROGRAMME: EMPOWERING UNEMPLOYED WOMEN THROUGH
PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT
MORETELE SERVICE POINT
Abstract
This proposal outlines a structured, closed, psycho-educational and support group for
unemployed women residing in the Moretele area. The ten-session group aims to
reduce the psychosocial distress associated with joblessness, strengthen internal and
external coping resources, and begin a process of economic empowerment. Grounded
in a developmental social-work philosophy, the group will utilise a person-centred,
strengths-based approach. This document presents the needs assessment that justified
the group, the group’s purpose and objectives, recruitment and composition strategies,
logistical arrangements, and ethical commitments.
, Ethical Considerations, Transformation, and Social Justice
Ethical Considerations
All group work will be conducted in accordance with the SACSSP Code of Ethics and
the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 where relevant. Before the group begins, each member
will sign an informed-consent form that explains the purpose, structure, limits of
confidentiality (e.g., mandatory reporting if a member discloses harm to a child or
vulnerable adult), and the voluntary nature of participation. Confidentiality will be a core
group norm; facilitators will emphasise that personal information shared during sessions
must not be discussed outside the group, except for de-identified material used in
supervision. The facilitators will maintain professional boundaries and treat all members
with respect and dignity, as required by the SACSSP Ecometrics Technology
Policy (2011) and the broader Code of Ethics. Should ethical dilemmas arise for
instance, a member dominating sessions or breaching confidentiality the facilitators will
address the issue directly and compassionately, first by reminding the group of the
agreed-upon norms and, if necessary, by discussing the matter privately with the
member concerned.
Transformation
The group is designed to facilitate both personal and social transformation. Through the
regular supportive environment, members will be encouraged to shift from a self-view of
helplessness “I can’t change my situation” to an empowered identity “I have skills and
resources”. Activities will include life-skills training e.g., budgeting, problem-solving,
goal-setting exercises, and the development of a personal action plan. The group will
also provide opportunities for members to practice assertiveness and communication
skills, which are essential for seeking employment and negotiating with community
structures. By the end of the programme, each woman will be assisted to identify at
