Question 1 (2025) — Letter of Request [50 marks]
Question: BACKGROUND
You are the Manager of Imfundo Literacy Projects. The main objective of your organ-
isation is to encourage literacy and reading in the community of Randavell. You are
launching a campaign to establish a library as part of a two-year activity programme.
Your contact details are: PO Box 256, Randavell, 3310. Telephone: 012 342 9800. Email:
.
INSTRUCTIONS
The Randavell City Council including the Director of Library Services supports local ini-
tiatives similar to your project. Write a letter to the Director of Library Services, Dr
Sello Diketso, Private Bag X246, ReadtoLearn, Pretoria, 3330.
• Give THREE reasons for establishing the library.
• Make a request for donations.
• Request FOUR specific pieces of equipment and types of books you would like the
Randavell Community Council to donate.
• Do NOT forget to express goodwill in the opening and closing paragraphs.
Exam Tip
A formal letter follows a strict structure. Always include: sender’s address (top
right), date, recipient’s address (left), salutation, subject line, body para-
graphs, complimentary close, and signature block. Each mark typically corre-
sponds to a structural element or a content point (e.g., each reason = marks, each
donation item = marks).
