Interdisciplinary Plan Proposal
The aim of the proposal is to outline a plan for the implementation of TeamSTEPPS

(Team strategies, and tools to enhance performance and safety) in an intensive care unit of a

large urban teaching hospital to improve collaboration and communication following breakdown

of communication and collaboration due to toxic leadership. The plan will be implemented in the

intensive care unit, with the aim of building psychological safety, foster collaboration and reduce

risks of sentinel events.

Objective
The primary aim of the plan is to implement TeamSTEPPS framework in the intensive

care unit to improve collaboration, teamwork and communication among allied members of staff

working in the unit. Successful implementation of the framework will improve teamwork,

collaboration and patient safety within the intensive care unit, thus reducing the risk of adverse

events.

a. Yes. TeamSTEPPS is an instructional toolkit that is designed to improve both

communication and collaboration. It is based on four key principles, mutual

support, leadership, situational monitoring, team structure and communication.

TeamSTEPPS relies on several techniques to improve communication including

SBAR (situation, background, assessment and recommendation) to support

sharing of critical communication. Indeed, extant research shows that

TeamSTEPPS improves communication among interdisciplinary teams (Matzke

et al., 2021).
