Information on the ESL Assessment Test
1. The ESL Assessment helps you succeed in your education at AVC by placing you
in the right courses for ESL.
2. You will need to have an admission application on file with Admissions &
Records in the Student Services lobby.
3. You will also need a Picture I.D. and Social Security Number or Student I.D.
Number.
4. Have the assessment staff assist you on a computer and let them know that you
would like to take the ESL test.
5. The exam takes about 1 hour and a half. The ESL assessment has 3 parts:
listening, reading, and grammar.
6. When taking your assessment, no children or visitors are permitted.
7. It will take 10 minutes to get a copy of your results. Please wait patiently and then
take your results to the Counseling Center.
Tips for taking the ESL Assessment
1. Get plenty of rest the night before your ESL assessment.
2. Allow 2 hours to complete the test before the closing hours. Do not rush!
3. If you have a question, ask the assessment staff.
4. Relax!! If you feel you did not do your best, you may re-take the whole exam or
any portion of it; however you must wait 24 hours.
After completing the ESL assessment go to the Counseling Center to have your results
interpreted by a counselor. You will then need to make an appointment to attend an
orientation. After the orientation, you will meet with a counselor to receive further
information for your course selection. If no dates are available for an orientation, ask to
speak to the ESL counselor. Thank you and we wish you the best at AVC.
