Classification and Basic properties of Microbes - SLOs
• Classify different types of medically important microbes.
Enlist the basic properties of various types of microbes
SLO5: Classify bacteria based on their nutritional
requirements and morphological characteristics.
• SLO6 Differentiate between eukaryotic and prokaryotic
cells by applying structural and functional criteria in
microbiological contexts
• SLO7: Identify appropriate laboratory equipment and
observe standard safety precautions during basic
microbiological procedures
, Classification and Basic properties of Microbes
• Medically important Microbe include following types:
bacteria, fungi, viruses, prions, parasites (protozoa and
metazoa).
• These further split into phylum, class, order, family, genus
and species.
• Taxonomy: Science of classifying and naming organisms.
• Taxa. Groups making up classification hierarchy.
• Taxonomy classify new organisms or reclassify existing ones.
• Mostly employed methods for classifying microbes are
morphological characteristics, differential staining,
biochemical testing, DNA sequencing, Polymerase chain
reaction PCR etc.
