• SLO4: List and describe the basic nutritional
requirements of microorganisms
• SLO5: Classify bacteria based on their nutritional
requirements
• Explain the factors effecting the growth of bacteria
, Bacterial Growth
• Growth is an orderly increase in quantity of cellular
constituents of an organism leading to increase in size
and number.
• The rule for bacteria growth can be described as single
cell dynamics and population dynamics
Single cell dynamics
• Binary Fission: process resulting in division of one
bacterium by splitting into two daughter cells of
approximately equal size.
• Providing no mutational event occurs the resulting
daughter cells are genetically identical to original cell
• Bacterial Growth occurs in exponential manner.
• 1cell→ 2→4 →8 → 16 i.e. 21, 22, 2³, 24, 24
