• Disruption of cell membrane or wall
i) Alcohols - ethanol, isopropyl
ii) Phenols - cresol, dettol, chlorhexidine, hexachlorophene
iii) Detergent - cationic, anionic, non ionic
• Protein modification
i) Halogens - chlorine, hypochlorites, iodine
ii) Heavy metals- silver, mercury
iii) Gaseous - ethylene oxide, formaldehyde
iv) Hydrogen peroxide
v) Acids and alkalies- HCl, H2SO4, NaOH, Benzoic acid
iv) Aldehydes – formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde
• DNA modification: Crystal violet, Malachite green, Acridine
