, Anti- microbial drug Resistance - LOs
• Explain genetic and non-genetic bases of antibiotics
drug resistance
• Explain the various types of antimicrobial drug
resistance with examples
• Explain the clinical significance of non-genetic basis
of resistance
• Correlate the impact of overuse and misuse of
antibiotics on selection of resistant bacteria
Knowledge
, Anti- microbial drugs
Selective toxicity: Selective inhibition of growth of
microorganisms without damaging the host. Drug should be harmful
to pathogens only without effecting host cells. It is achieved by
exploiting difference between metabolism and structure of microbial
and host cells.
Antimicrobial drugs: more antibacterial drugs than antiviral.
Broad spectrum or Narrow spectrum
4 Major sites of action of Antimicrobial drugs
Cell wall, Cell membrane, Ribosomes and Nucleic acids
Mechanism of action of antimicrobials
• Inhibition of synthesis of Cell wall peptidoglycans, mycolic acid,
Protein, Nucleic acid
• Alteration of cell membrane function in Bacteria, Fungi
• Electron sink. Accept electrons depriving the organism of reducing
power
