Microscope is an equipment to see the details of small objects that are not visible to the
naked eye. It is composed of a system of different lenses which enlarge an image many
times. Microscope is widely used in all branches of biomedical sciences. A minute error
in its adjustment may obscure very important observation in the field of study.
Parts
Base: It gives stability to the body and eye-piece. It carries the light source; the intensity
of light is controlled via light adjustment knob.
Body: It is the part between the base and the eye-piece. It is composed of a tube
containing main optical system of objectives. It carries screw for fine and coarse
adjustment.
Nose piece: It is the most important part of microscope because magnification of image
depends upon it. It consists of objectives of different power i.e. 4*(scanner), 10*(low
power), 40*(high power), 100*(oil immersion lens). The objectives are fixed to a rotatory
disc which can be adjusted accordingly.
Stage: It is meant for keeping slide to be examined. It can be moved in two planes via
pair of screws.
TYPES OF MICROSCOPE ON THE BASIS OF EYE-PIECE:
Binocular Microscope:
Compound binocular microscope is called because it consists of two or more lenses along
with two eye-pieces. The advantage is that the images can be seen with both eyes at once;
it is more restful when examining specimen for long periods.
Monocular Microscope:
This type has one eye-piece.
