diagnostic facility and healthy working environment for health care workers and other visiting
people the Pathology Lab by reducing the possibility of personal injury.
General Lab Safety Rules and Guidelines for Lab Employees
Observe General Lab Rules and Guidelines while working in Lab
All workers must wear their photo identification badge with the name and photograph.
Eating, drinking and smoking are prohibited in the lab. Do not bring any food, drinks or
water bottles into the laboratory or store in lab refrigerator.
Keep personal belongings in an area separate from the work area
Do not handle personal items (cosmetics, cell phones, calculators, tablets etc.) while in
the laboratory.
Get yourself vaccinated against infectious diseases.
Follow proper Safety procedures and sterile techniques.
Dress Code and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Wear PPE while working inside
the lab:
• Laboratory coats knee long, buttoned and clean.
• Closed toe shoes that cover the top of the foot.
• Head cover after tying back long hair.
• Disposable Mask and Gloves
• Immediately change the lab coat if soiled by chemical, reagent or infectious
material. Never wear lab coat and gloves outside of the lab. Remove your gloves
before going out of Lab, going into the computer room or the offices.
• Regularly cut finger nails.
Safe Working Practices and Techniques
Follow proper SOPs and safety precautions while performing tests. Use the equipment
according to instruction guides only.
Always wear gloves when handling blood, serum or other sample for microbiology
testing.
Wash the hands with soap and water after removing gloves or working, before working
or leaving the laboratory. Alternately Sanitizers should be used.
Daily clean the working bench with 70% Isopropylene alcohol or any other disinfectant.
Maintain working counters and lab clean.
Do not perform mouth pipetting in the laboratory.
Avoid exposure to infectious vapors and aerosols in the laboratory. Use BSC while
inoculating culture media.
, Dispose of contaminated material and dirty glassware, tissue papers and specimen
properly.
Disinfect the equipment and counters before starting and after finishing the work with
the provided disinfectant, alcohol or 1:10 dilution of bleach.
Store the labeled reagents, solutions and other material at proper place in the lab with
appropriate warnings. Wipe down the chemicals when you are done using them and
return all chemicals to shelves.
Do not touch clean things like telephone, pen, key board, register etc. with gloved
hands.
ASK if you do not understand how to do something.
Please return any borrowed thing to respective bench immediately after using it.
Do not distract other workers by narrating jokes or horseplay in the laboratory.
Notify the person Incharge of any problems or accident as soon as possible. If you break
something, please report it to the person Incharge.
Keep the sinks and eye washes free of glassware, etc.
Always close freezer/ refrigerator/ incubator door when not in use. Always turn off the
microscopes after using them. Turn the light off when you exit.
Clean up spills immediately per policy.
Place and handle the apparatus and glass ware carefully.
Make sure samples are capped tightly and counterbalanced appropriately.
Access / Permission: No unauthorized person shall enter the laboratory. Always close
and lock the lab door if no one is inside. The non- laboratory personnel like electrician,
plumbers and biomedical engineers etc. shall work in lab areas under supervision of lab
manger/technician. Personal protective equipment must be provided to them, as
necessary.
Keep the corridors and exits free of any obstacle that may interfere with the free
passage of persons and access to safety equipment.
Emergency situations
Notify the person Incharge / supervisor of any problems as soon as possible so that
remedial action can be made by the coordination with other departments and
administration as required.
Be alert to any unsafe condition and action
Check the codes for different emergency situations posted on wall
Listen to the code announcements carefully.
Use the emergency phone numbers posted on wall to inform the concerned responsible
person about emergency or in person if required.
Follow the fire accident instructions posted on wall.
