Sociology as a science P1 + P2 P1 - 'Can' - Positivist. Comte - we can apply scientific methods to study
society. Social facts can not be influenced by opinion and are scientific
laws. AO2: Durkheim's study of suicide - can't be considered random and
entirely individual, one pattern is that suicide rates where higher in
Protestant countries compared to Catholic, his theory is that suicide is
influenced by social facts. If sociologists use research methods that avoid
becoming subjectively involved they can remain objective e.g.
questionnaires.
Part b: Positivists say that we should create a theory by observation,
pattern, tentative hypothesis, theory. It is inductive, meaning it starts by
collecting data and evidence after analysis then form a theory. (In case of
10 marker) It is based upon verification - collecting evidence to try prove a
theory true. Eval: can't be science if using interpretivist methods, only
quantitative data is scientific because there is no subjectivity.
P2 - 'Should' - Comte 'if we borrow the methods of science success will
follow'. This ensures: prestige, authority, status, protection, find the 'truth'.
Eval: Feminists disagree - Oakley: science is patriarchal in nature and
creates a research hierarchy where participants are used and discarded.
