The society is diverse. Diversity can be defined in several ways, depending on how an
individual understands the concept. Washington (2008) defines diversity as a societal
representation of a group of people with various characteristics such as culture, races, religion,
and age. Mazur (2010) examines diversity as a socioeconomic difference among people,
organizations, ethnics, and races. From the two definitions, the concept of diversity can,
therefore, be harmonized as the uniqueness of an individual and recognizing the individual
differences within the society. Marriott International is one such company that has for many
years accepted the individual differences within the society and has been working towards
inclusivity. The company engages in the hospitality sector. According to Marriott’s 2017 Chief
Executive Officer, the company has flourished due to its multicultural inclusivity policies.
Marriott International has been ranked among the top diversity companies in the United States. It
has more than 400, 000 employees which comprise of people of different ages, ethnics, races,
nationalities, and disabilities.
Why the Company is committed to diversity
Marriott International is a global diversity company. It embarks on diversity as a key
driver to its economic empowerment. The company recognizes that the global economy is
growing fast and complicated for marketers with new technological advances and a shift in
demography. As a result of this, every individual is equal and worthy and therefore need to be
treated with equal measure. The company has more than 5000 hotels globally with a diverse
number of employees (Serve 360 report, 2018). The company serves all kinds of people in the
global sociocultural economy. Enhancing diversity and culture is part is a therefore essential part
