Law is the system of rules devised by the state, which are meant to control human actions and may
be enforced.

a) State is a non-physical entity, an abstract notion or phenomenon created by citizens through
their deemed agreement (i.e. social contract) in terms of which they entrust their existence,
power and resources to this imagined authority.
It is said to be deemed because:
- Citizens entrust their existence, power and resources to this imagined authority (state).
- Because citizens expect the state to take care of them or nation in various ways,
including keeping the law and order (protection) and providing other social and
economic services.

Paulo Freire speaks of notion of praxis in terms of this concept, that every aspect of thinking or
knowledge should be accompanied by action or application.
So based on the Lephepane Village story about Kiba, he was mainly concerned about getting the
driver’s license without ensuring that he also develops the necessary driving skills to enable him to
apply his knowledge when Mr Shocks gave him the truck at Triple X (pty)Ltd. It was not enough for
him to get the driver’s license, but rather what is important was for him to learn and develop driving
skills so that he would be able to use it effectively when the situation demanded him to.
