, Implementation of Technology-Driven Mental Health Screening in Juvenile
Detention Centers
Mental health issues in juvenile detention centers present a
significant healthcare challenge requiring urgent, evidence-based
interventions. Many detained adolescents suffer from mental health
conditions such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress
disorder, and substance abuse, which often go undetected due to a
lack of standardized screening protocols (Duchschere et al., 2023).
At the Miami Dade Juvenile Detention Center, the current practice
relies on inconsistent assessments and fragmented documentation
systems, resulting in missed diagnoses, delayed interventions, and
increased safety risks. This paper proposes a comprehensive
strategy to improve current practice through the implementation of
technology-driven solutions that include the Massachusetts Youth
Screening Instrument-Second Version (MAYSI-2), Electronic
Health Records (EHRs), and telepsychiatry services. The proposed
intervention aims to enhance quality, patient safety, and cost-
effectiveness, while ensuring patient-centered care through
interprofessional collaboration and leadership in process
improvement.
