Chapter 1: Matter in Our Surroundings
1. Physical Nature of Matter
Everything in the universe is made up of material which scientists have named
"matter". Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.
Matter is Made up of Particles
• For a long time, there were two schools of thought regarding the nature of matter:
one believed matter to be continuous like a block of wood, while the other thought
that matter was made up of particles like sand.
• Matter is particulate in nature. This means it is made of tiny particles.
How Small are these Particles?
The particles of matter are extremely small—they are small beyond our imagination.
Even a small crystal of potassium permanganate can color a large volume of water
(about 1000L) because there are millions of tiny particles in just one crystal.
2. Characteristics of Particles of Matter
1. Particles of matter have space between them: When we make tea,
coffee, or lemonade, particles of one type of matter get into the spaces
between particles of the other.
