Summary of the Chapter
“A Letter to God” is a story about Lencho, a poor farmer who completely trusts God. He lives
with his family in a lonely valley. His crops need rain, and when rain finally comes, Lencho is
very happy. But soon, a hailstorm destroys all the crops.Lencho becomes very sad because the
harvest was his only source of income. Still, he has strong faith in God. He writes a letter to God
asking for 100 pesos to help his family survive.The postmaster reads the letter and is deeply
moved by Lencho’s faith. He collects money from his employees and sends it to Lencho.
However, they can gather only 70 pesos.When Lencho receives the money, he becomes angry
because he expected 100 pesos. He believes God never makes mistakes, so he thinks the post
office employees stole the remaining amount. He writes another letter asking God not to send
money through the post office because the employees are “a bunch of crooks.”
