Question 1
It is vital to note that Hermeneutics is essentially a philosophy of interpretation and self-
interpretation of the knowledge and world around us. It acknowledges the impact and
influence of the outside world and our communities but encourages learning and realisation
from an individual’s viewpoint. Hermeneutics comes down to our ability to engage with
symbols and understand what education is. In terms of education, Hermeneutics’ role in the
classroom can be essential in helping learners take in new knowledge, interpret it for
themselves and develop a sense of self-interpretation concerning the subject being covered.
It also allows the educator to establish any prior knowledge learners may have on a subject
and discern their interpretation of the subject. This is vital, as it will enable learners to
participate in a far more positive environment, where their understanding of subject matters
and teachers can focus on what works for them and what does not. A great example of how
to establish prior knowledge and gauge interpretation is by allowing an open discussion on a
topic between the teacher and learners. This will assist the educator in helping learners grow
their understanding of a complex subject and focus on them, developing as an individual
within the community of the classroom. The educator opens up a discussion concerning their
topics and elicits information from learners by asking questions, raising points and
encouraging feedback from all learners. Through this exercise the educator can further
identify the learners’ viewpoints and understand why they behave in a certain way- they can
interpret what their learners are interpreting. They can then clarify any disagreements in
views and introduce more in-depth information to the learners’ knowledge. Hermeneutics
essentially comes down to the search for meaning within our communities (in this case the
classroom) and using the teachings and interpretations of knowledge our communities have
to gain self-interpretation. The educator needs to use this need for identification within a
community of learners and establish a learner’s knowledge and find how best to appeal to
their need to identify and interpret the information taught.

Max van Manen and Shaun Gallagher are modern philosophers and educators who follow
the philosophy of Phenomenology- being based on reality and our experiences of it, rather
than the scientific analysis of that experience. Max van Manen became “appalled at the
emphasis on performance, outcomes and detached, scientific analysis which was the basis
of Canadian and American education.”1 Because of his findings, he actively engaged in a
phenomenological approach to teaching. He believed that the learner and teacher were not
in a relationship based on disconnected activities and examinations, but rather a personal
one, based on trust and hope. Furthermore, van Manen argued against the fact that children
were ‘empty vessels' to be filled by their teachers. Concerned more with the natural
