, Al Personal Values
personal values that I have when it comes to being a leader in education are
respect, transparency, honesty, trust, and empathy. All of these values have been instilled
in me as a child and have been cemented throughout my life experiences. I grew up on a
farm in Wyoming where I learned many life lessons. Respect has always been deeply
rooted for me since it was taught to me at such a young age. I have always believed that
respect is a two-way street. With this two-way street, you build trust which is why trust is
also one of my values. A philosophy I have developed through education is when there is
trust between staff, the staff is much more willing to help. These values appear in many
different codes of ethics. For instance, respect appears in three different dispositions in
the SOE code of ethics. It appears under belonging, empathy, and professionalism. These
all show how important respect is when it comes to being a good leader. I believe you can
show respect as a leader by being transparent and empathic towards others. In addition to
this, I believe honesty is another important value.
Honesty appears with integrity in the SOE code of ethics. Being honest as a leader
is a great way to develop trust as well. I have always been an honest person in life. If
someone asks for advice, they will always get a truthful answer from me. Sometimes, this
truth is difficult to hear at the time, but being a leader means you have to have difficult
conversations at times. This has also been developed as a philosophy of mine for
education. Being honest with others while showing empathy has been a philosophy of
mine to help build staff relationships. These personal values will stick with me
throughout my career, and they align with the SOE code of ethics for educational
leadership.
A2. Ethical Obligations
I will have many ethical obligations when I become a school leader. All of these
ethical obligations will come back to me referencing my personal code of ethics. These
ethical standards that I set for myself will guide the decisions I make when it comes to
students, families, and staff. As an educational leader, I am going to be held accountable
for my actions. By regularly communicating with students, families, and staff about
decisions I am going to make in school, I will be transparent, respectful, and build trust
among the stakeholders.
I will model ethical obligations to students by being transparent with them. I will
share my points of view when it comes to positive interactions and disciplinary actions.
Being transparent with students will help build trust with them. I am also going to be fair
and just when making decisions that impact students. I will be a positive role model to
students and demonstrate what it is like to have good character. It is important that I
adhere to my personal code of ethics and align these with a professional code of ethics.
