The Benefits of Technology in the Workplace

The introduction to technology has not only boosted personal interactions, but has
exponentially risen business production as well. Not only does technology allow consumers to
reach a product or service easily, but has allowed businesses and the economy to thrive due to the
more efficient production of goods and services, which is what prosperity is dependent on. The
benefits, however, are not without disadvantage. The reliance on technology has correlated to a
distinct drop in areas where it was specifically meant to help. With the assistance of technology,
workplaces see an influx of time conservation linked with productivity, increased mobility for
workers, and an easier system of communication between both business professionals and
consumers.
The use of technology allows for increased time conservation and a massive increase in rates
of productivity. In a study, “Nurses used their smartphones to locate information about
medications, procedures, diagnoses, and laboratory tests. Downloaded apps were used by nurses
to locate patient care–related information. Nurses reported improved communication among
health team members and used their personal devices to communicate patient information via
text messaging, calling, and picture and video functions”(deJong et al. #2). From this study it is
evident that these nurses were able to work exponentially faster with the help of smartphones.
Not only did the smartphones allow for quicker production output, but in regards to patient care,
technology aids allow for faster treatment especially when a patient’s situation is dire, it can save
, lives. The increased dependence of technology to perform one’s job allows for decreased brain
productivity and an increased sense of laziness. In certain cases, even perceived distraction due
to the use of devices can be harmful to professional reputations. In the study, “Nurses expressed
insight into personal smartphone use and challenges related to distraction, information privacy,
organizational policies, and patient perception” (deJong et al. #2). While using a phone, whether
it be for work or personal use, based on perception from patients, coworkers, or superiors it can
gravely affect personal reputations and first impressions. Normally, devices that are intended for
work use, are strictly for that purpose and are marked or given specific branding and
programming to show distinction and avoid personal use. Superiors and coworkers would easily
be able to distinguish use from a personal device and a device dedicated to work use only. In the
matter of patient distinction, it would be imperative to notify patients (or even consumers in
general) beforehand that the device you are using is strictly for professional use and to not be
alarmed. Use of new and improved technology has not only increased job productivity but
consumer satisfaction as well. All benefits astronomically outweigh any costs.
With the convenience and mobility of technology, businesses and companies everywhere can
allow employees to be productive from many settings. Allowing employees to work from home,
allows for optimal productivity while in a comfortable environment. Other than essential workers
who don’t get the luxury of working from home, those who do, experience increased
productivity and an increased sense of job satisfaction. Not only would employers save money
on real estate, but employees would save money on gas, there would be no need to fork over
paychecks for uncomfortable work attire, and employees would have access to healthier and
more nutritious food from home that could help increase brain function. Those, “People who
have never liked schmoozing with colleagues have found new heights of productivity away from
meetings and office chit chat. People worried about climate change are eager to reduce their
