Abstract
This paper includes a literature review relating to secondary students’
motivation and the effects an increase or decrease in motivation has on the
students. In general, the literature indicates that motivation does affect
students as they move through their secondary education. Motivation
affects their ability, learning strategies, completion rate, engagement, daily
and school-related tasks, and their sense of being challenged. Students’
motivation changes based on their gender and the gender stereotypes
surrounding their age. Motivation affects all students. When students’
motivation is high, they are positively affected and produce a higher
academic quality level.

Secondary education is a term used to reference middle or high school
students because it is the second half of their public educational career.
Motivation is defined in the dictionary as the reason one has to act or
behave in a particular way. The Need for Cognition or NFC is someone’s
extent to participate in difficult cognitive activities. The NFC relates to a
student’s cognitive ability: a person’s ability to reason, problem-solve,
comprehend, think deeply and plan. Attention Deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD) is a disorder that causes above-average hyperactive and impulse
actions. A Flipped Learning approach is when it allows direct instruction to
happen outside of the group learning space. Then the group learning space
can be used for interactive learning. Learning strategies are different
approaches to teaching that will help students better understand the
material they are being given. Competence is the ability to do something
efficiently. Finally, strategy-based teaching has two parts. Students are
taught how, and why they should use specific strategies and then the
strategies are woven into their regular classes.
The study aims to determine the effects motivation has on secondary
students. As they increase in grade level, their motivation tends to
decrease. What does that do to their ability level? How does that change
them and their view on their education? Research question: What are the
