Applying the P-O-L-C
Management and Organization Theory (BMGT 364)
Executive Summary
Outdoor Adventure Paintball Park opened its doors ago eight years ago. The location was
very accommodating as the nearest competitor was at least 30-45 minutes. The
community responded by showing unmatched loyalty to the company by way of frequent
visits, spiked season pass sales, and an increased number of sponsored corporate events.
The passion from management as well as the previous experience in areas of sports and
or training has helped the company continue to achieve success in the industry. Lately,
there seems to be a decline in that passion and overall improvement to the running of the
organization is needed.
There are areas of concern within Outdoor Adventure Paintball Park that has to
immediately be addressed. Starting with ensuring that scheduling is done in a way that
will prevent both under or overstaffing during peak and down times in order to help the
company run more efficiently when there are a lot of customers. Another area of concern
is employee training. Employees had previously been assigned to one specific
department, which required little to no knowledge about others. This creates barriers in
opportunity in the event that a specific employee isn’t available. The once dominant hold
on the markets is lessening and there is no clear-cut “manager” or decision maker
stepping up. The community has noticed the non-existent management amongst other
things and is slowly reducing the frequency in which they visit Outdoor Park.
, In order to strategically rectify these issues, Outdoor Adventure will revitalize the image
to remind the community of the mission and vision of the owners. Mike, Daisy and
Ethan. The team has to also better understand the strengths and weaknesses that are
present and build upon them to help the company run more efficiently. While showing
that management has the know how to respond to adversity and keep the company afloat.
Background
Outdoor Adventure was an idea had by two brothers and an aunt who wanted to offer an
outdoor adventure part to members of the community so that they did not have to travel
30 – 45 minutes for such services. The community embraced the park and customers
frequented the establishment to show support. As more and more community members
flocked to the park, members of management had to find ways to accommodate using
personnel already emplaced. Employee’s being proficient in multiple areas is a concern
for management, as the organization is not utilizing an organic structure. Organizations
with organic structures tend to have better communication and are more flexible. The job
descriptions are broader and employees are asked to perform duties based on the specific
needs of the organization at the time as well as their own expertise levels (Burns, T., &
Stalker, M. G. (1961).
The passion that was once had by the family has lessened and the effects are being felt
through the organization. Scheduling has become an issue and there have been an
increase in overbooking and occurrences of understaffing. Customers are complaining
that all around service is poor quality, which is resulting in the company losing business
from customers that were at one time loyal. An obvious lack of management and
leadership is present and utilizing the functions of management, it is time to revisit the
drawing board to revitalize the company.
