Family Background and Early Life
Hitler was born in 1889 in Austria-Hungary. His father, Alois, was a strict and quick-
tempered customs officer with a complicated marital history, eventually marrying his
younger cousin, Klara. After the deaths of three older siblings in infancy, Hitler was "spoiled
rotten" by his mother. His childhood was marked by frequent moves and a difficult
relationship with his father, who frequently beat him after his older brother ran away.
Education and Delinquency
Initially, Hitler was a successful student, popular with peers, and fond of "war games."
However, as he grew older, he became a delinquent, engaging in smoking and organized
raids. His academic performance declined following the death of his brother. Although he
eventually passed his final semester, he showed contempt for his education by using his
certificate as toilet paper during a night of drinking.
The Vienna Years and Failed Ambitions
At 18, Hitler moved to Vienna to pursue art but failed the entrance exam for art school.
Following his mother's death, he returned to Vienna and fell into poverty, eventually
becoming homeless in his early twenties. He survived by selling hand-painted postcards.
During this period, he was heavily influenced by the widespread anti-Semitism in Vienna
and the city's outspoken anti-Semitic mayor. He began consuming right-wing newsletters
and conspiracy theories regarding "racial struggles" and "Aryan" superiority.
