IELTS Writing Task 2 Complete Strategy Guide | 2025–2026 Edition | For personal study use only
, 1. Understanding IELTS Writing Task 2
IELTS Writing Task 2 is the most important part of the IELTS Writing test — it carries twice
the weight of Task 1. You are required to write an essay of at least 250 words in response to a
point of view, argument, or problem. You have approximately 40 minutes to complete this
task.
Many candidates underperform not because they lack English ability, but because they do not
understand what the examiner is looking for. This guide fixes that.
Key Facts Every Candidate Must Know
Minimum word count: 250 words (going below loses marks automatically)
Recommended word count: 270–290 words (quality over quantity)
Time allocation: 40 minutes (leave 3 minutes to proofread)
Weight: Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to your Writing band
Topics: Social issues, education, environment, technology, health, globalisation
The essay must be formal — no contractions (don't → do not), no slang
CRITICAL TIP: Never memorise template essays. Examiners are trained to spot them and
will penalise your score for 'memorised language.' Instead, memorise structures and
flexible phrases.
2. The 4 Question Types Explained
Every IELTS Writing Task 2 question falls into one of four categories. Misidentifying the
question type is one of the most costly mistakes a candidate can make — it leads to an off-
topic essay and a low Task Response score.
Opinion / Agree or Disagree
Trigger phrase: Do you agree or disagree? / To what extent do you agree?
Strategy: Give YOUR clear opinion and defend it throughout the entire essay. Do not sit on the
fence unless the question asks for a balanced view.
Example questions:
Some people think that universities should focus only on academic subjects. To what
extent do you agree or disagree?
Governments should spend money on public transport rather than building new roads.
Do you agree?
