CHAPTER - Units & Measurements
,🔹 Concept Explanation
Physics is based on accurate measurement of physical quantities. Every physical quantity
must be expressed with a numerical value and a unit.
There are two types of physical quantities:
Fundamental quantities: Independent (length, mass, time)
Derived quantities: Depend on fundamental quantities (velocity, force)
Measurement is never perfectly exact — errors always exist.
🔹 Types of Errors
1. Systematic Errors
o Due to faulty instruments
o Same mistake repeats
o Example: wrong calibration
2. Random Errors
o Occur due to human or environmental factors
o No fixed pattern
🔹 Accuracy vs Precision
Accuracy → closeness to true value
Precision → consistency of results
👉 A measurement can be precise but not accurate.
🔹 Important Formula
Percentage Error = (Absolute Error / True Value) × 100
🔹 Solved Numerical 1
Q. A physical quantity is measured as 95 units, while its true value is 100 units.
Calculate the percentage error.
, Measured value = 95
True value = 100
Absolute error = 5
Percentage error = (5/100) × 100 = 5%
🔹 Solved Numerical 2
Q. Three measurements of a quantity are 10, 12, and 11 units.
Find the mean value and the absolute error.
Three readings: 10, 12, 11
Mean value = (10 + 12 + 11) / 3 = 11
Absolute error = average deviation = 1
🔹 PYQ (Previous Year Question)
Q: Define significant figures.
Answer:
Significant figures are meaningful digits in a measurement that include all certain digits and
the first uncertain digit.
🔹 Trick
👉 “Systematic = Same mistake always”
👉 “Random = Random fluctuation”
🔹 Practice Questions
1. Define accuracy and precision
2. Calculate percentage error if measured = 48 and actual = 50
3. What are significant figures?
