lectrostatics – Description (NEET Physics) What is Electrostatics? Electrostatics is the branch of physics that deals with electric charges at rest and the forces, fields, and potentials produced by them. In this chapter, we study: How electric charges interact Attraction and repulsion between charges Electric field and electric potential Capacitors and storage of electric energy Electrostatics forms the base of modern electricity and electronics. Main Concepts of Electrostatics 1. Electric Charge Electric charge is a physical property of matter responsible for electric force. Types of Charges Positive charge (+) Negative charge (−) Important Rules Like charges repel each other. Unlike charges attract each other. 2. Coulomb’s Law Coulomb’s law explains the force between two stationary charges. The force: Increases with increase in charge Decreases with increase in distance It is similar to gravitational force but much stronger. 3. Electric Field The region around a charged body where another charge experiences force is called an electric field. Characteristics Represented by electric field lines Direction is away from positive charge Direction is towards negative charge 4. Electric Potential Electric potential is the work done in bringing a unit positive charge from infinity to a point. It tells us: How much electric energy is present at a point. 5. Electric Flux and Gauss Law Electric flux measures the number of electric field lines passing through a surface. Gauss law helps calculate electric fields for: Spherical objects Cylindrical objects Infinite sheets It is one of the most important laws in electrostatics. 6. Electric Dipole A pair of equal and opposite charges separated by a small distance is called an electric dipole. Examples: Water molecule Polar molecules Dipoles experience: Torque in electric field Rotational effect 7. Capacitor A capacitor is a device used to store electric charge and energy. Uses of Capacitors Electronic circuits Mobile chargers Cameras Power supplies Parallel plate capacitor is the most important type for NEET. Importance of Electrostatics in NEET Electrostatics is one of the highest-weightage chapters in NEET Physics. Frequently Asked Topics Coulomb law Electric field Electric potential Dipole Capacitors Energy stored in capacitor Both theory and numerical questions are commonly asked. Real-Life Applications Electrostatics is used in: Photocopiers Printers Electrostatic painting Air purifiers Capacitive touch screens
