Assignment 3 Semester 1 2026

Due Date: 22 May 2026

DIFFERENT WAYS IN WHICH TOURISM HAS BEEN CONCEPTUALISED OVER TIME

Tourism has changed over time because people now travel for many different reasons linked
to leisure, culture, history and social experience. In earlier periods, tourism was mainly
understood through European experiences where travelling was associated with expensive
holidays, long journeys and luxury destinations (APY3704 2023:8). This understanding
excluded the experiences of ordinary people and non Western societies. Tourism in Africa
has also been shaped by colonialism and slavery because these historical processes
influenced how African people, cultures and environments were represented to outsiders
(APY3704 2023:8). Tourism today includes cultural tourism, historical tourism, ethnic tourism
and nature tourism which all influence what tourists expect to see and experience in Africa
(APY3704 2023:9). This essay discusses different ways in which tourism has been
conceptualised over time and explains how history, representation and cultural interaction
shaped tourism in Africa.

QUESTION 1

DIFFERENT WAYS IN WHICH TOURISM HAS BEEN CONCEPTUALISED OVER
TIME

Tourism has changed over time because people now travel for many different
reasons linked to leisure, culture, history and social experience. In earlier periods,
tourism was mainly understood through European experiences where travelling was
associated with expensive holidays, long journeys and luxury destinations (APY3704
2023:8). This understanding excluded the experiences of ordinary people and non
Western societies. Tourism in Africa has also been shaped by colonialism and
slavery because these historical processes influenced how African people, cultures
and environments were represented to outsiders (APY3704 2023:8). Tourism today
includes cultural tourism, historical tourism, ethnic tourism and nature tourism which
all influence what tourists expect to see and experience in Africa (APY3704 2023:9).
This essay discusses different ways in which tourism has been conceptualised over
time and explains how history, representation and cultural interaction shaped tourism
in Africa.

Tourism was originally associated with travel for leisure among wealthy European
people. Earlier ideas of tourism focused on long and expensive journeys which were
mainly accessible to privileged social classes (APY3704 2023:8). European
experiences became the standard used to define tourism. This created the belief that
tourism should involve luxury accommodation, seaside resorts and formal holidays.
Tourism was therefore viewed as an activity connected to relaxation and social
status (APY3704 2023:8).

Over time, tourism started to include ordinary social experiences and less expensive
forms of travel. Towner argued that tourism should also recognise informal journeys
such as visiting family members and friends because these experiences are
meaningful forms of travel as well (APY3704 2023:8). Tourism therefore became
broader than only expensive holidays. Visitations of friends and relatives became
recognised as an important part of tourism because they involve movement, social
interaction and cultural exchange between people and communities (APY3704
2023:8).
