Hi Brian,
Thank you for contributing to the group and submitting your response to this weeks
discussion. I really enjoyed reading your thread of FTA’s as they are essential to foreign trade
between nations. This agreement is extremely important, as you mentioned, to importing and
exporting because it can allow a group of nations to have less regulation and more open trading
without the need for tariffs for goods and services. I like that you included how NAFTA has
recently changed to CAFTA because, even though I don’t agree that its political, it showed the
American people how NAFTA wasn’t a huge success for any country. NAFTA at the time was
the largest trading bloc in the world before CAFTA (Nelson, 2018). CAFTA was a larger
success with exports to the Central Americans countries rising 84% (Murphy, 2015). This shows
the importance of FTA’s and the impacts it can have on smaller and less developed countries. It
can also have a large impact on the bigger countries like CAFTA did with the US with
agriculture exports rising from $1.6 Billion to $4.3 Billion in 2017 (Hafmeister, 2018). Leviticus
25:14 is a great business verse that can be directly related to exports and FTA’s. It states that,” If
you make a sale to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor, you shall not wrong one another”.
This is important in FTA’s because one country should not be the only benefit from the
agreement. All countries must be able to see growth in their economy for the agreement to be a
success.
