Developing Resiliency in the Squad
Without resilience, the U.S. Army would not be the fighting force it is today. ADP
6-22 defines resilience as the “Tendency to recover quickly from setbacks, shock, injuries,
adversity, and stress while maintaining a mission and organizational focus.” Resiliency is
vital to performing both physically and psychologically. You may think there are only two
aspects, however, within these two disciplines are a multitude of skills needed for the proper
health of both as outlined by AR 350-53. Leaders are the forefront of fostering an
environment for soldiers to be resilient. Developing resiliency within the squad is crucial
because it is necessary for success for individuals in the squad that make the mission possible.
Army regulation 350-53 1—5 states “A resilient and fit individual is better able to
leverage intellectual and emotional skills and behaviors that promote enhanced performance
and optimize their long-term health.”
