Topic
Impact of Treating Concomitant Sleep Apnea on Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Pulmonary Arterial
Hypertension
Primary Research Question
Among patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and coexisting sleep apnea, does treatment of
sleep apnea improve clinical and hemodynamic outcomes compared to no treatment?
(We can include all WHO groups of Pulmonary hypertension too OR include that in sub group
analyses)
PICO outline
-> Population: Adults with confirmed PAH (WHO Group 1) OR if data is not enough all the groups, with
coexisting sleep apnea (OSA or CSA).
-> Intervention: Treatment of sleep apnea (e.g., CPAP, BiPAP, oxygen, or mandibular devices).
Comparison: No treatment of sleep apnea or poor adherence.
-> Outcomes:
Primary: Change in 6MWD, mPAP, RV function, or mortality.
Secondary: WHO functional class, NT-proBNP, QoL scores, hospitalization.
Inclusion Criteria (tentative/ can modify)
Adult patients ≥18 years with WHO Group 1 PAH, diagnosed per RHC.
Sleep apnea confirmed by polysomnography or home sleep study.
Outcomes comparing treated vs. untreated sleep apnea.
Prospective or retrospective observational studies, cohort studies, or clinical trials.
