1. National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
Definition: “a test authorized by Congress in 1969. The NAEP’s mission is to collect,
analyze, and present reliable information about student knowledge and practice of that
knowledge.”
● Important in assessing students on a national level
2. Visual Literacy
Definition: “the first and most pervasive literacy (Avgerinou & Ericson, 2002; Stokes,
2002). Sinatra’s classic model (1986) of literacy development suggests the interactive
relationship of visual literacy with the oral and written literacies.”
● Adds a visual component into a written dominated idea around literacy as a whole
3. Attitude
Definition: the mental disposition one exhibits toward
others.
● Important in understanding a students feelings towards school and their academic
journey as a whole
4. Cognitive Dissonance
Definition: a motivational state of tension resulting from an inconsistency in one’s
attitudes, beliefs, perceived behaviors, etc.”
5. Graphic Organizers
Definition: visually represent relationships among concepts, thoughts, and ideas. They are
also called concept maps, story maps, advance organizers, story webs
● These can be used to organize projects or different essays for students and can be
tailored to the child as needed
6. Anticipation Guide
, Definition: sometimes called a reaction guide or prediction guide, is a prereading strategy
that teaches both content and literacy along with reading skills ap-propriate for all learners
(Kozen, Murray, & Windell, 2006)
7. Analogies
Definition: Similar to previews, analogies begin with a connection point to the
reader’s background. However, whereas analogies carry out a comparison, previews
focus more directly on the material to be read
● Creating these connections and allowing the students to make them is
important for critical reading skills

Definition: The constructivist theory of learning emphasizes the important role of the learner
in literacy tasks, allowing readers to feel comfortable with learning because they are so fully
in- tegrated in putting it all together.

Definition: students and teachers establish a dialogue and work together in
comprehending text. At the heart of reciprocal teaching are four shared goals: prediction,
summarization, questioning, and clarification. First, the teacher assigns a paragraph.
