LESSON PREPARATION [Before the lesson]
Topic: Topography and Geography Specific Strategy: Group discussions,
Whole class discussions, active learning
and creativity, differentiated instruction.
Subject: Social Studies Grade: 4th
State Standard:WG.5 The student will analyze the characteristics of the regions of the United
States and Canada.
National Standard:NCSS III, People, Places, and Environments. The study of people, places, and
human-environment interactions leads learners to create their spatial views and geographic
perspectives of the world.
Primary Objective: The students will be able to identify specific locations on the United States Map
and identify new vocabulary with 90% accuracy on 4 out of 5 trials.
Classroom Diversity and Differentiated Instruction: Classroom Diversity: This is a Special
Education classroom at an alternative school. There are 8 students in the classroom. The classroom
consists of 6 boys and 2 girls. Two of the students are designated to have a one on one staff. There are
3 staff plus the teacher in the class. All students have an IEP in place for various behavioral disabilities
Differentiated Instruction: Students will receive assistance with reading along with read alouds
available to struggling readers. Students will be allowed to work in pairs on certain assignments.
Students will receive assistance identifying and defining unknown vocabulary.
