Journal Article Summary
Introduction
Positive characteristics and behaviors are generally favored in order to receive successful
responses. One such behavior is altruism. Altruism is when someone acts to elevate another
person’s welfare. This happens in a selfless manner whether there is a risk or costly to oneself.
Some people are naturally altruistic, and some require self-control. (Kamas et al., 2008).
Altruism behavior all depends on the type of person. Not everyone is altruistic. Some
people prefer to receive more than to give. Altruism makes people feel good. It releases
endorphins and brings positivity. The rewards of altruism are often internal opposed to external.
(Kamas et al., 2008).
It is said that women are supposed to be more altruistic than men. Women may directly
apprehend altruism based on their intuition. Women also receive more gender bias expectations
to be more altruistic than men. When it comes to material items, or monetary purchases women
are often more careful than men when taking such risks. Depending on the risks, women can also
make irrational purchases.
Men are commonly less altruistic, and do not take such risks if those risks aren’t always
beneficial. There are few men who are altruistic. They are either naturally altruistic, or they are
enticed for whatever reason to become altruistic. It is also more common for both genders to
become altruistic when mixed in a group setting. (Kamas et al., 2008).
A dictator experiment was conducted at a charity event to see whether women or men
gave more apart or together. Evidence showed that women gave a substantial amount of charity
more than men. When mixed in the same group, both men and women gave a lot. Men gave
