1. Culture Analysis
Organizational culture is a combination of shared assumptions, beliefs and values which
dictate how people in a organization operate and behave on a daily basis. The culture in an
organization can be key to the organizations success as well as its employees job satisfaction,
engagement, and performance.
This paper will attempt to assess the culture in a small branch of the Army Air Force
Exchange Service that's primary mission is the prepare food for the base convenience stores and
a mobile food truck. The organization also provides in flight meals for 2 airlines that transport
service members, their families, and cargo to and from other bases in the Asia-pacific region as
well as Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
The AAFES mission statement is as follows:
Since 1895, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service has been
serving a critical role in strengthening military readiness, recruiting and
retention. Today, the Exchange continues to go where Warfighters and their
families go to provide tax-free shopping and military-exclusive pricing at
installations worldwide and at ShopMyExchange.com. The Exchange is the
61st largest retailer in the U.S., achieving highly competitive earnings of
5.8% of sales in
2018. Exchange earnings provide dividends to military Quality-of-Life
programs. The Department of Defense’s largest retailer, the Exchange is
governed by a Board of Directors responsible to the Secretaries of the Army
and Air Force.
The specific organization analyzed in this paper however is a small
operation that fulfills a contract AAFES has with the airlines which have contracts
with the Department of Defense.
Airline catering is staffed by 10 lower level employees, 1 manager, and 1 assistant
manager. The 10 employees work very well with one another. While 2 of those 10 are
supervisor's, they work side by side with the other 8 employees, often doing the same tasks. The
supervisor's and managers however are the only one's in the building with access to the phones
and computers. This means all information coming into the organization must be heard/read by a
supervisor and verbally passed along to the employees. Often times the message is
misinterpreted at some point in one way or another, or not passed along at all. This is causing
inefficiencies in the organization.
Communication between the supervisors and employees is excellent. This is primarily
due to the fact that the supervisors often work side by side with the employee's. However the
