Exploring my Academic Program
University of Maryland Global Campus
My research into the Human Resources Management field led to the following answers of these
questions:
1. Why did you select an academic program in this field?
My current job has a small amount of human resources duties, to the extent of small
amounts of recruitment and payroll duties, ensuring policies are adhered to, employee
relations, and assisting union workers. These are aspects of my job that I generally feel I
do well with and enjoy which made me want to delve a bit more into the other aspects of
Human Resource Management.
2. What industry certifications are related to your career field? Are there any which you are
interested in pursuing? You can read more about industry certifications here:
www.careeronestop.org/Toolkit/Training/find-certifications.aspx.
There are several widely known certifications in my field of human resources
management. These certifications are: Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior
Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), Global Professional in Human Resources
(GPHR), and SHRM-Certified Professional (SHRM-CP). I am interested in pursuing the
SHRM-CP or PHR at the least, as these are required or preferred by many companies for
a human resources job. Over time I may be interested in a senior level or global
certification depending on my career path in HR.
