Minimum Personal Protec ve Equipment
Includes eye protec on and appropriate clothing.
Eye Protec on
OSHA approved eye equipment (at minimum mee ng ANSI Z87 impact standard) shall be worn
whenever any experimental work is in progress in the laboratory. Cannot precent all injuries,
but provides be,er protec on against chemical splashes. Regular glasses cannot be subs tuted
and contact lenses should not be worn.
Clothing
Minimum skin exposure and closed toe and heel shoes. No swim suits, tank tops, high heels,
pla.orm shoes, or sandals. Should be appropriate to laboratory. Loose long clothing & hair
should be confined

Emergencies
Call University Police (911 from campus phones/bluelight and elevator phones or 408-924-2222
from cell phones) if me is cri cal. Any situa on involving fire, chemical spill, or personal injury,
and faculty or staff member is not available, call 4-4921 or 4-5000 in Duncan Hall or 4-4990 in
Science for assistance. AAer 5pm or on weekends call 911.
Building Evacua on
If you hear emergency alarm or are told to evacuate by Emergency Coordinators or Monitors,
walk to nearest stairway (not elevators) and exit. Take personal belongings with you. Evactutrac
evacua on devices are located on 4th and 6th floor of every Duncan Hall stairwell and on every
3rd floor of science stairwell. Be quiet and follow instruc ons of Emergency Coordinators.

, If you exited Duncan Hall, move towards grassy area on San Carlos Street Mall or to other side
of San Salvador St. If you exited from Science Building, move to grassy area near Tower Hall or
across Fourth St. Do not return to building unless permi,ed by Emergency Coordinators or
Police.
Earthquake
Find cover or if doorways, desks, & lab benches are unavailable, face up against inner hall walls
and protect your head. Remain inside following University Police or Emergency Coordinators.
Fire
Call faculty/staff member nearby or call 911. If trained personnel can't control fire, close doors
and confine fire. Stay calm, avoid breathing air, use towel/clothing to protect lungs, stay near
the floor, and do not open doors hot to touch. If trapped, place clothing or other marker outside
window & shout at regular intervals. Stairwells are most fire resistant.
Chemical Spills
Clean non-hazardous ones with paper towels and water (check with instructor). Do not a,empt
to clean a hazardous spill on you own and no fy faculty/staff member. First aid should be
started on anyone contaminated by spill to make sure spreading of contamina on does not
occur.
Injuries
Call 911 if serious or life threatening situa on. Try to obtain help & provide first aid. All injuries
must be reported to instructor and completed on an accident report. Go to Student Health
Center for treatment.
Inges on Hazards

2. No ea ng, drinking, or use of cosme cs in laboratory.
3. Never use chemical equipment as containers for food or drink
4. Never use food or drink containers to store chemicals
5. Smoking in laboratory is prohibited
6. Normally, never taste, or deliberately inhale any chemicals
Contact Hazards
1. Learn loca on of eyewash fountain and safety shower. Learn to use them. (In case of serious
accidents where 1+ students' eyes are chemically exposed, using sink filled with water or
running water to rinse eyes might be necessary)
