[*] Exam Tip
The 2023 paper consisted entirely of one section: an essay of about 500 words on
one of three given topics. Students selected only one topic. All three topics and model
answers are provided below for complete revision coverage.
SECTION A: ESSAY (100 marks)
Write an essay of about 500 words on ONE of the following topics. Support your argument
with examples.
Question 1 100 marks
Question: Orientation roadshows are not necessary for students studying at open-
distance learning universities. Write an essay in which you either agree or disagree with
this statement. Support your argument with examples.
Answer: Orientation Roadshows: A Vital Bridge for Distance Learners
Open-distance learning (ODL) has transformed higher education by making university
access possible for working adults, rural communities, and learners who cannot relo-
cate. Yet precisely because ODL removes face-to-face contact, orientation roadshows
become more necessary, not less. This essay argues that orientation roadshows are an
essential component of the ODL experience.
The most immediate benefit of a roadshow is familiarisation with university infras-
tructure. ODL institutions such as UNISA operate primarily through virtual platforms,
and many students – especially first-generation university entrants – struggle to navigate
myUnisa, submit assignments online, or locate academic support services. A roadshow
provides hands-on guidance that a welcome letter cannot replicate. Students learn where
to access library resources, how to use the Turnitin system, and whom to contact in
cases of academic distress.
