1. WHAT ARE LIFE PROCESSES?
All living organisms perform certain basic functions essential for survival.
Definition:
Maintenance processes performed by living organisms for
their survival are called Life Processes.
Main Life Processes:
Nutrition Respiration Transportation Excretion
2. NUTRITION
AUTOTROPHIC HETEROTROPHIC
Plants, Algae Animals, Fungi
Some Bacteria Most Bacteria
Use sunlight/chemicals Depend on others
Make own food Holozoic, Saprotrophic
Examples: Photosynthesis Parasitic mode also
2A. PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Process by which green plants prepare food using sunlight, CO2, and water.
Equation:
6CO2 + 6H2O ■■Sunlight/Chlorophyll■■■ C6H12O6 + 6O2
Conditions Required:
Sunlight Chlorophyll CO2 Water
Two Stages:
Light Reaction (in Thylakoid) → Splits water, releases O2, produces ATP
Dark Reaction / Calvin Cycle (in Stroma) → Uses CO2, produces glucose
★ Stomata — pores on leaves that allow CO2 in and O2 out. Guard cells control opening/closing.
