How the ENG2612 Examination Works
Key Concept
Module: ENG2612 – Applied English Language for Foundation and Intermediate
Phase: Home Language (HL)
Format: Online portfolio examination (48 hours). Two questions are provided. You
choose ONE and write an essay of approximately 1 000 words.
Total marks: 100. Your essay is marked holistically – content, argument, language
use, and structure all count.
Key rule: You may consult your study material and prescribed texts, but you may not
copy verbatim. Write in your own words. Do NOT cite external sources.
Exam Tip
What the examiner looks for in every essay:
• A clear, arguable thesis stated in the introduction
• Specific references to the provided extract(s) – quote briefly and analyse
• Correct use of linguistic terminology: register, tone, diction, syntax, modality, dis-
course markers, figurative language, code-switching, genre, audience
• A well-structured body: each paragraph makes one point, provides textual evi-
dence, and explains the effect
• A decisive conclusion that does not merely repeat the introduction
• Formal academic register throughout

not just about punishing criminals and preventing crime; it’s about addressing the root
causes that lead to criminal behaviour in the first place. We must tackle poverty, inequal-

all. But that’s not all, we must also provide support and resources to those who need it
most to help them escape the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future for themselves
and their families. Till next week, my man. ‘Send me to Mangaung Correctional Centre.’
