HED4804 Assignment 2 MEMO 2026:
Conceptualising (African) Philosophy of Education as the Creation of
Concepts-in-Place
Philosophy may seem difficult and far away, like something only scholars study. But in
real life, we all think like philosophers. This happens when something surprises us or
om
makes us stop and think differently about the world. In education, African philosophy is
about creating ideas that make sense in our own place and situation. It focuses on real
c
life, our history, and the challenges we face every day. This kind of thinking is very
e.
important for teachers, especially in countries like South Africa. It helps them
on
understand their learners better and respond to real problems in meaningful ways.

1. Defining Philosophy and Arguing its Importance in a Complex World
ns
Philosophy, as understood in this module, is not merely a set of abstract ideas or
A
doctrines to be memorised. Rather, it is a practical activity, the act of thinking critically
and creatively about fundamental questions that shape our lives and practices. Learning
Unit 1 explains that philosophising involves wondering about questions such as: What
does it mean to be human? What is good? What is true? What is just? (Learning unit 1,
p. 1). These questions are not remote from daily life; our responses to them, whether
articulated or implicit, reveal the kind of person we are and how we act in the world.
