Protecting the public: keep people imprisoned to keep society safe, right realists,

Rehabilitation of offender: alter the offenders mindset so re-offending can be prevented,
forward looking, assumes criminal behaviour is of free will and rational choice.
Eysenck/Banduras learning theory. Sociological theories and left realism favours
rehabilitation.
Reducing crime/Deterrence: prevention, forward thinking, short sharp punishments,
Banduras social learning theory, Marxists,
Recompensating victims if appropriate: making amends, financial compensation or
unpaid work, allows victim and offender to come together and communicate, labelling
theory, functionalism.
